5 of My Best Kept Secrets to Traveling Easy, Quick, and Light
If there’s one thing that comes with the territory of ministry, it’s travel! As we get closer to travel season, I thought it would be fun to share some of our best practices when it comes to planning for travel.
Chances are you and the family are planning some vacation or holiday trips over the next few months. Whether you’re going on a three-day business trip or preparing for a two-week vacation, here are some guidelines for maximizing suitcase space, minimizing your load and cutting down on wrinkles!
Tip #1: Invest In A Solid Carry-On
Look for one that is lightweight yet durable. A carry-on with smooth-rolling wheels and a sturdy handle can make navigating through airports a breeze. Investing in a quality carry-on not only makes travel more convenient but also ensures that your essentials are always within reach, allowing you to embark on your journeys with confidence and ease. Plus take it from me, nothing is worse than having to drag a uncooperative bag around. It slows you down and causes a damper on the whole trip.
Tip #2: Create a Separate Toiletry “Kit”
Having two separate toiletry kits ensures that you have access to essential items no matter where you are during your travels. For your carry-on, pack travel-sized versions of your hygiene essentials such as toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, hand sanitizer, facial wipes, and any necessary medications. Remember to adhere to the airline's liquid regulations, typically allowing containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
In your checked bag, you can include larger bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and other items that you might need for a longer stay. Don’t forget to pack any special skincare products, extra razors, and a spare toothbrush. It's also a good idea to include a small first aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and any prescriptions you might need.
This dual-kit approach not only keeps you prepared for any situation but also ensures that you won't be left without your essentials if your checked luggage is delayed.
Tip #3: Count (and Pack) Socks and Undergarments First!
Seem like packing 101 but trust me, its so basic that is is often overlooked. These are essential items that you don't want to overlook. Make sure to bring enough pairs to last the duration of your trip, plus a few extras just in case. After that, focus on packing your clothing in layers: start with your basics like t-shirts, jeans, and shorts, then add in any specialty items such as formal wear or activity-specific gear. Don't forget to check the weather forecast for your destination so you can pack appropriately.
Tip #4: Keep Toiletries at the Top of Your Bag (In Case TSA Pulls It)
This simple tip can save you a lot of hassle and time during security checks. By keeping your toiletries easily accessible, you can quickly remove them if needed, avoiding the need to dig through your entire bag. Plus, it helps to keep your belongings organized and ensures that you don't accidentally leave anything behind in the rush. Another handy tip is to use clear, resealable bags for your liquids and gels, which makes it easier for TSA agents to inspect them. Being prepared and organized not only speeds up the process but also makes your travel experience more pleasant and stress-free.
Tip #5: Pack the Important Items.
Don't just pack the essentials such as toiletries, travel documents, and electronics; include anything crucial or indispensable in your carry-on luggage. For instance, if you're going to a wedding, pack your outfit in your carry-on. If you have a special gift to bring, make sure it's in your carry-on. While many items can be replaced or substituted if a bag is lost, keep anything essential for your journey with you at all times.
I’m all for checking a bag when it is convenient and reasonably priced. Checked baggage fees, small overhead compartments, and long waits at baggage claim are just a few reasons it pays to pack light and packed prepared.
If your flight is canceled or delayed (something I’m all too familiar with), having your bag in hand can be the difference between getting on with your trip or spending a miserable time coming up with a backup plan.
My hope is that these tips give you some insight into your own journey when it comes to travel!
